Dentures and Veneers – Aesthetic Dentistry

Aesthetic Dentistry

At Burns Family Dentistry, we have combined experience of over 50 years in fitting dentures and we pride ourselves in our ability to treat even difficult patients with great results. We treatment plan your case from the surgery to the delivery and we always provide followup care. Many dental offices will refer you out to an oral surgeon to remove your teeth and even have the surgeon fit the denture. This disconnect may produce an ill fitting denture. Other dental offices do not remove excess bone (alveoplasty) when they remove your teeth which may result in sharp areas under your denture causing excruciating pain.

At our office we do the extractions, alveoplasty surgery and fit your dentures ourselves, often utilizing sedation for a more comfortable experience. We use only the highest quality materials in your denture (no shortcuts!) and many times can have a new denture placed in just over a week!

A full denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues.  Dentures are made to resemble your natural teeth so there should be no noticeable change to your appearance. In fact, dentures may even improve your smile! A full denture is used to restore your smile and mouth function if all your teeth have been lost or need removal. The dentures are custom created to resemble natural teeth and are positioned to take the place of natural teeth. Complete dentures are removable and may require adjustments in order to create a proper fit with the gums and mouth. If your denture was placed at the time of your extractions (immediate dentures) then your denture may loosen over time as the tissue underneath heals. We recommend an evaluation for a possible reline after 6 months.

Partial Dentures VeneersA removable partial denture is a device used when one or more natural teeth still remain in the upper or lower jaw. They usually consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic and metal base which is held in place in the mouth using clasps on the remaining teeth. We also Offer partial dentures that are metal free using Flexite or other materials. These are light weight, natural looking, thin and practically unbreakable. Both types have their pros and cons, so ask us which one is right for you.

New dentures and partials may feel awkward or loose for the first few weeks until the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place and you are comfortable eating and speaking. Although this may require some practice you will adjust and enjoy the benefits a full mouth of teeth can provide.

Veneers (Composite or Porcelain?)

Veneers (Composite or Porcelain?)

Veneers are a dental procedure in which a covering is placed over the front (visible area) of the teeth, changing the shape and color, to perfect the smile. Veneers are usually only applied to the part of the tooth that is visible when talking or smiling. This can be accomplished by either placing composite resin on the teeth chairside, often referred to as bonding, or by placing thin porcelain facings on the teeth.

Using the bonding technique we can transform your teeth in just over an hour to the smile you’ve always wanted and it is very affordable! This is one of my favorite techniques, because I can change someone’s smile right before their eyes! We prepare the teeth with minimal grinding to adjust the shape or just to roughen the surface, sometimes without any shots. We pick a tooth shade or combination of shades and the composite resin is added like a putty, shaped and cured with a bright light. It is then polished to a beautiful luster and you are ready to smile! Composite resin can last 10 years or more and can easily be removed, repaired and replaced.

Porcelain veneers are more expensive to do, but are very beautiful and can last 20 years or more. They usually involve two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In a few days or weeks the veneers are back from the laboratory, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic and are very aesthetic. In some cases, veneers can be created using CEREC cad/cam technology and be done in the office in a few hours. It is an investment in yourself and can transform your smile and bring out a new happier, more confident you!

The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth material is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable. Crowns are recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth structure.

Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers that we are happy to offer as one option for a painless way to a permanently whiter and perfectly aligned smile. We can apply these contact lens-thin ‘smile shapers’ to teeth without any grinding or shaving, transforming teeth into a naturally beautiful smile. Lumineers can even be placed over existing crown or bridgework without having to replace them. This works great for repairing chipped or broken porcelain on old bridgework instead of an expensive replacement of the whole thing.

Because Lumineers are contact lens-thin, using patented Cerinate porcelain, they can be placed over existing teeth without having to remove painful tooth structure. Traditional porcelain veneers had to be thick for strength so the teeth had to be trimmed back significantly or else they would be made too bulky. Lumineers porcelain veneers is a painless, permanent cosmetic solution for stained, chipped, discolored or misaligned teeth. It’s a great way to a more perfect smile!
